If Google Was A Guy

Here's what to store and what to style next season

Here atMarie Claire, we get our fair share of questions about tricky trends. But of course, we all reserve our most burning questions for when we can hide behind the anonymity of the Google search bar.

‘What are backless mules?’ ‘How do I wear cropped flared without looking like my jeans have shrunk in the wash?’ ‘Are furry slippers acceptable outside of the boudoir?’ and ‘WTF even is boudoir dressing?’ are all perfectly reasonable questions, but sometimes you’d rather chuck them into the ether of the Internet than ask your impossibly stylish friend, who takes to trends like a duck to water goddamn her.

Last year, the search engine realised the potential in their role as an unofficial fashion agony aunt, and introduced a fashion report that documents which trends are in and which are out, according to the search volume around them.

‘Our second Fashion Trends Report shows what’s hot right now through the lens of Search,’ Torrance Boone, VP of global agency sales and services at Google toldMarie Clairetoday. ‘We’re letting the patterns and data tell the story, as both provide context not only on what people are wearing now, but also where trends originate and where they’re potentially headed.’

In 2015, they heralded the rising popularity of jogging pants (hello athleisure!). And this year? Scroll on to find out…

Time to ditch
We were sad to see sleeveless waistcoats are on the out – their ability to dress up a t-shirt in the office when you suddenly get pulled into an important meeting will never be forgotten. We’re quite happy to see the back of drop crotch trousers though. If the divine Cate Blanchett has failed to pull this one off there’s little hope for it. As for ‘see through clothes’, they sounds a little dubious to us. Here’s the full list of downtrending items:
– Drop Crotch Pants
– See Through Clothes
– Acid Wash Jeans
– Babydoll Dresses
– Asymmetrical Skirt
– Sleeveless Waistcoat
– Suede Skirt
– Lace Up Top
– Cord Pinafore Dress

On the up
Bomber jackets and ripped jeans are reigning supreme next season. In April, searches for bomber jackets grew 297% here in the UK. Gigi Hadid is the unofficial ‘face of’ the trend, having registered the highest association with bomber jacket searches. While military colours are dominating, interest in pink bomber jackets has peaked and it seems we’re just as interested in feminine embellished and embroidered versions as we are in classic camo-colours.
