How to Make a Tuna Casserole

Two Methods:

Tuna casserole is a hearty meal that's easy to make with ingredients you probably have on hand. For a quick casserole, combine canned mushroom or celery soup with cheese and tuna. Then toss the mixture with cooked macaroni and sprinkle breadcrumbs or potato chips on top. For an old-fashioned casserole, make your own creamy sauce and add sautéd vegetables with the tuna and noodles. Top the casserole with breadcrumbs. Bake either casserole until it's bubbling and golden.

Ingredients

Easy Tuna Casserole

  • 1 (10.5 ounce or 298 g) can of cream of celery or mushroom soup
  • cup (79 ml) milk
  • 1/4 cup (58 g) mayonnaise
  • 1/2 teaspoon (1 g) dry mustard
  • 1 cup (100 g) cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 (7 ounces or 198 g) can tuna, drained
  • 1/4 cup (25 g) breadcrumbs or crushed potato chips
  • 1 tablespoon (14 g) butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon (0.5 g) paprika

  • 1/4 teaspoon (0.5 g) ground black pepper

Steps

Baking Easy Tuna Casserole

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 °F (177 °C) and grease a casserole dish.Get out a 1 1/2 quart (1.4 liter) casserole dish and rub the inside with olive oil or butter. You can also use cooking spray.
    • Greasing the casserole dish will prevent the casserole from sticking.
  2. Combine the soup, milk, mayo, and mustard in a large bowl.Open 1 (10.5 ounce or 298 g) can of cream of celery or mushroom soup and scoop it into a mixing bowl. Stir in cup (79 ml) of milk, 1/4 cup (58 g) of mayonnaise, and 1/2 teaspoon (1 g) of dry mustard.
    • If you don't have dry mustard, substitute the same amount of prepared mustard.
  3. Stir the shredded cheese and drained tuna into the bowl.Add 1 cup (100 g) of shredded cheddar cheese and 1 can (7 ounces or 198 g) of drained tuna to the bowl. Use a spatula or spoon to stir the mixture until it's combined.
    • Depending on the size of the tuna cans, you may need to use 2 smaller cans. For example, if you have 3.5 ounce (99 g), you'll need 2 cans.
    • Use shredded mozzarella or monterey jack, if you prefer.
  4. Stir in the cooked macaroni and spread the mixture in the dish.Add 2 cups (4 ounces) of cooked and drained macaroni or short pasta. Use the spoon or spatula to mix the noodles with the tuna mixture. Then spread the casserole into the prepared dish.
    • If you don't want to use macaroni, use shells, ziti, or penne.
    • If you'd like to add peas to the casserole, stir in 1 cup (150 g) of frozen green peas before you spread the mixture in the dish.
  5. Spread a mix of breadcrumbs, paprika, and butter over the dish.Melt 1 tablespoon (14 g) of butter in a small bowl and stir in 1/2 teaspoon (0.5 g) of paprika, and 1/4 cup (25 g) of breadcrumbs or crushed potato chips.
    • Scatter the breadcrumb topping evenly over the casserole.
  6. Bake the tuna casserole for 45 to 50 minutes. The sauce should be bubbling and the top will become crispy and golden brown once the casserole has finished baking. Serve the casserole with green beans, steamed vegetables, or a tossed salad.
    • Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 or 4 days.

Making Old-Fashioned Tuna Casserole

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 °F (191 °C) and grease a casserole dish. You can spray a 1 1/2 quart (1.4 liter) casserole dish or rub the inside with butter or olive oil. This will prevent the tuna casserole from sticking.
    • Set the dish aside while you prepare the casserole.
  2. Stir the flour into melted butter and cook it for 1 minute.Heat 4 tablespoons (56 g) of butter in a deep skillet over medium heat. Once the butter melts, stir in 1/4 cup (30 g) of all-purpose flour. Keep stirring and cooking the roux until it thickens into a paste.
    • The roux will thicken the tuna casserole.
  3. Whisk the warm milk into the roux and cook it for 3 to 5 minutes.Slowly pour cups (590 ml) of milk into the skillet and whisk constantly. Continue to whisk and cook the sauce until it thickens. Turn off the burner and set the sauce aside.
    • If you don't whisk steadily, the sauce will be lumpy. If your sauce gets lumps, you can use an immersion blender to blend the sauce.
  4. Sauté the vegetables in 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of the oil for 7 minutes.Heat the oil in a separate skillet and add the chopped vegetables once the oil shimmers. Stir in 1/4 teaspoon (1 g) of fine sea salt and 1/4 teaspoon (0.5 g) ground black pepper. Cook and stir the vegetables frequently as they cook.
    • The onion should become translucent and the mushrooms will release their liquid.
  5. Transfer the noodle mixture to the dish and pour the sauce over it.Spoon the noodle mixture into the greased casserole dish. Then pour the creamy sauce evenly over the noodles.
  6. Scatter a mix of bread crumbs and oil over the dish.Toss 3/4 cup (70 g) of bread crumbs with the remaining 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of oil. Sprinkle the mixture over the casserole.
  7. Bake the tuna casserole for 20 to 25 minutes.Put the dish in the preheated oven and bake the casserole until it's golden. The sauce should bubble once it's finished cooking. Serve the casserole with a green salad.
    • Refrigerate leftover casserole in an airtight container for up to 3 or 4 days.
