Party Tips: Throw a Perfect Mother's Day Brunch

How to throw a fabulous mother’s day brunch

Reblogged from Planning It All:

The most important part about Mother’s Day is finding a way to celebrate that doesn’t involve work  for the mothers that you’re honoring. I assume that’s why Mother’s Day brunches are so popular – Dads and kids get to treat Mom to a meal out without her having to cook and clean.

This year I have the honor of hosting my mother and mother-in-law together for a Mother’s Day brunch (along with my father, father-in-law, brother-in-law, and of course, husband). I’m not going to give away my secret plans – especially because I know my mom reads my blog – but share some tips to help you make your brunch special.

Of course  you don’t have to host a brunch (many of these tips will also be appropriate for any meal) but brunch seems to strike the right cord of being just a little bit indulgent so you’re pampering your mother.

Be Prepared

As I mentioned, the most important part is making sure the guests of honor aren’t put to work. I don’t know about your mother, but mine is a “oh let me help you” type. So I want everything to be set before the guests arrive so my mother doesn’t end up helping me finalize a dish or set the table. I want to be able to hand her a mimosa when she arrives and direct her to the couch to relax.

The Menu

Going along with being prepared, I’m likely to choose a menu that can be largely made ahead. I love breakfast casseroles to feed a crowd. I’m a big fan of this French Toast casserole and this breakfast egg and sausage casserole – both can be assembled the night before, sit overnight in the fridge and then get popped in the oven in the morning.

Mimosas will also be on the menu, along with coffee. But you might want to include a Bloody Mary bar or a specialty cocktail – whatever your mother’s favorite.

The Décor

You don’t need to go over the top. A simple centerpiece of fresh flowers would be lovely. I love the idea of purchasing hand tied bouquets that can double as a Mother’s Day gift she can take home after brunch – place it in a pitcher and tie with a ribbon or burlap for a rustic look.

If you have more time, you can use fun family photos to make a vase, such as this idea via Bonitismos:

Some other ideas:

If you have children, a great way to get them involved would be to make handcrafted placecards.

This fingerprint table runner is another fun kid’s craft (although I might make my husband and brother-in-law try it…)

In terms of china, do whatever your mom would appreciate the most. If she loves fine china (she probably bought you a few of those place settings!) then bring out the formal set! If she is more casual, a nice bamboo disposable set might be nice.
