Missoni Spring/Summer 2019 Collection – Milan Fashion Week
Through a childlike lens, Angela Missoni created a collection for women of all ages for the spring/summer 2019 seasons. Missoni took her inspiration from two things: her family and Masai African culture. The designer created her looks with a strange, but successful, combination of features, which many people would never consider cohesive, but she blew this assumption away. She created looks for an urban girl, of any age, which came across in the silhouettes and overall presentation of theMissoni spring/summer 2019 collection. But the addition of the bright colors and large patterns brought a sense of childlike fun, which amplified her looks and brought a whole new dimension to her designs.
And to bring everything together, her hair and makeup was spot on for her intent. The eyeshadow each model wore was a bright shade. This brings images of a very young girl rummaging through a makeup bin and surfacing with the brightest color she could find on her eyes. But the execution of the makeup, along with the sleek hair, brought that idea to a more modern feeling for the everyday woman.
The classic house aesthetic was left intact, with the majority of the looks walking the runway being easy to wear, and perfect for women on the go. Missoni proclaimed backstage that the new Missoni spring 2019 collection was all about sportswear, perfectly fitting in with this theme and really coming across in the ensembles. Each model sported a pair of Converse, adding the final touch to the urban edge sportswear the collection conveyed. This feeling of pristine edge was prevalent in many of her designs, but one of the most striking looks was her skin tight, floor length dress, with a zig zagged pattern, blocked off by black panels, where each pattern in the bodice was lined up perfectly; a step that not all designers wish to accomplish. In this case, I’m so glad she did, because the result was truly spectacular.
Her African inspiration was also clear in her Kaftan inspired looks and midriff tops that gave off the essence of the culture. The bright colors seemed to tie into this as well, showing the vibrant nature and tendencies of the clothing.
Above all of her inspirations, the Missoni spring 2019 line-up was a fun display, and despite that, even, it gave off the vibe of a modern woman, who is not afraid to stand out in a crowd or experiment with different silhouettes. Her clothes were made for a woman who travels the world – a true jet setter – and must be prepared for any situation that comes her way.
Missoni truly met her goal; these clothes weren’t designed for one distinct age, and exuded joy with an edge. She didn’t lose the house design amid all her sources of inspiration, and even expertly married together two cultures that many would see as unconventional.
