Tip 4: How to find out the file size
To find out the size of a file or folder, hover the object with the mouse cursor and hold it for 1 second. A pop-up menu will appear in the window, which will indicate the current file size in the “Size” line. Depending on the size of the document, the data will be displayed in bytes, kilobytes, megabytes or gigabytes. In the event that the object is a folder, a short list of documents that are stored in it will be displayed.
To obtain more accurate information about the file size, as well as its location in the system and programs with which it can be opened, you can right-click on it to display the context menu and select the “Properties” option. In the lines "Size" and "On disk" the document size will be displayed in the appropriate unit of measurement for the file. The number of bytes occupied by the document in the file system will be indicated in brackets.
Among other programs, with the help of which you can find out the file size, you can mark special file managers. Thus, Total Commander, using its own functions, also provides data about the document. You can also use the Far utility, which is one of the most popular programs for performing operations of moving, copying and viewing files.
If you want to reduce the size of the document to be sent by e-mail or stored on a removable storage medium, use the program-archiver. To do this, install the WinRAR utility by downloading it from the official website of the developer and run the resulting installer.
Then right-click on the document and click "Add to archive ...". For maximum size reduction in the “Compression ratio” line, select “Maximum”. Click "Ok" and wait for the archive file, which by the amount of space occupied may be significantly less than the original document.
Videos, pictures and music files are practically not amenable to compression, and therefore it will not be possible to significantly reduce their size using an archiver.
